The Department of Economics fosters highly knowledgeable generalists who can flexibly respond to the tumultuous changes that characterize the world today, and turns out many promising individuals who can take on active roles in various areas of society.
The Department offers an excellent curriculum, which provides students with the opportunity to acquire writing and expression skills, foreign languages and mathematical techniques. To expand the depth and width of their knowledge, various subjects are also offered to stimulate intellectual curiosity; those studying in the Department approach economic matters from diverse angles, including those of the environment, fair trade, art and sports.
Students can gain the qualities required to become internationally minded individuals with global perspectives by taking subjects related to economic theory and others that will equip them to consider economic matters from specific perspectives. These include history, regions (e.g., Europe, Asia, America, Japan and Hokkaido) and individual fields (e.g., agro-economics, local government finance, and small and medium enterprises).
The Department of Economics also features individually tailored education in which lessons are provided to small groups of students in formats such as seminars from the first to the fourth years of study. Students are given the opportunity to foster their ability to delve into specific issues and hone their presentation skills.
