From June 1 to June 12, 2026, Hokusei Gakuen University welcomed five students from Universitas Andalas, a partner institution in Indonesia located on the island of Sumatra. The exchange was conducted under the departmental agreement between the Faculty of Economics of both universities. Special Lecture on Universal Design
Following the special lecture on Universal Design by Professor Suzuki, students engaged in a lively discussion about accessibility and inclusion. One of the participating students, Ms. Sharmila, shared her experience teaching dance to children with disabilities in Indonesia and expressed a strong interest in Japan’s approaches to disability inclusion. In response, Professor Suzuki introduced several projects in which he had been involved and explained the concept of universal design from both practical and social perspectives. The students enthusiastically asked questions throughout the session, leading to a vibrant exchange of ideas and comparisons between Indonesia and Japan.

Learning about Ainu Culture at Sapporo Pirka Kotan
On June 7, the students visited Sapporo Pirka Kotan, where they learned about the history, culture, and traditions of the Ainu people. Fortunately, the visit coincided with a Kotan-nomi, a traditional ceremony praying for the safety and well-being of homes and the community. The students had the opportunity to observe the ceremony and traditional dances and were even invited to share Ainu cuisine, reflecting the Ainu spirit of community and sharing. At the end of the event, they joined a traditional circle dance together with Ainu people, making for a memorable and meaningful cultural experience.

Through this exchange program, the students from Universitas Andalas deepened their understanding of Japanese society, culture, and academic life while building friendships with members of the Hokusei community. We hope that this experience will further strengthen the partnership between our two universities and lead to continued collaboration in the future.
